Before buying a car from Japan for Kenya, verify its first-registration date, steering configuration, required inspection and vehicle-specific import costs. A listing's model year and an estimated shipping price do not establish eligibility or the amount payable to clear the vehicle.

Start with the vehicle's official records
KRA's motor-vehicle import procedure identifies first registration, right-hand drive and inspection by a KEBS-appointed agent as key checks. Do not substitute the advertised model year for the first-registration record. Ask your licensed agent to confirm the applicable annual age boundary and expected arrival timing before reserving a car, especially near year-end.
Keep the same stock reference and vehicle identity on the listing, quote and supporting documents. If a date, steering description or image is missing or inconsistent, request clarification before proceeding.
Confirm the current inspection appointment
Use the current KEBS PVoC manual, version 15, issued 19 February 2026, and subsequent official notices to confirm the Japan inspection route and required certificate. Do not assume a familiar inspection company is currently appointed, or that a certificate for another destination will be accepted.
A supplier's condition sheet and an AI translation are not substitutes for the required conformity evidence. Ask what original documentation will be supplied and when, and confirm the actual inspection fee in the written quote.
Prepare the document set
KRA lists the commercial invoice, cancelled foreign registration/logbook, bill of lading, pre-shipment roadworthiness certificate and importer PIN documentation among the supporting records; company documentation may also apply. Confirm the complete current set, format and vehicle-specific requirements with your agent. This is a starting checklist, not an exhaustive list for every importer.
- Identify the buyer or importing company consistently across the application and invoice.
- Confirm the first-registration record and the exact vehicle identity.
- Agree who obtains each certificate and when originals or accepted copies will be available.
- Have your clearing agent review the documents before shipment where possible.
Separate shipping cost from customs cost
Ask WI for the vehicle price and agreed Japan-to-port services, with freight, inspection and insurance clearly itemised. Ask your Kenyan agent for the current customs valuation, applicable charges, port costs, clearance, registration and onward-delivery estimate. An exporter invoice is not itself the customs assessment.
We do not publish a universal tax percentage or a guaranteed Japan–Mombasa transit time here. Vehicle classification, current rules, booking and port conditions must be checked for the specific shipment. Keep sailing estimates separate from inspection, clearance and collection milestones.
How to choose a model without assuming eligibility
Start with your budget, parking space, passenger needs and local servicing options.
